Ghost of Yotei’s Marketing Could Undercut its Leaked Release Date

Summary

  • Ghost of Yotei’s release date was leaked for July 2025, but with minimal marketing, its validity is questionable.
  • Sucker Punch’s light marketing approach may imply a big reveal soon, potentially at Sony’s next State of Play event.
  • The sequel will introduce new mechanics, weapons, and a different protagonist set in Japan in 1603, offering fans fresh gameplay.

Ghost of Yotei is not only one of the most anticipated titles of 2025, but also one of the most anticipated titles of the last five years, as its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima, left fans in awe and awaiting what comes next for the series. While Ghost of Yotei doesn’t continue the story of Ghost of Tsushima‘s Jin Sakai as many fans likely expected, it is nonetheless the continuation of a series that surprised gamers in 2020 with its captivating open world, compelling and emotional narrative, and engaging samurai gameplay. As such, the fact that Ghost of Yotei is slated for a 2025 launch and that year has finally come means that long-awaited dream is nearly a reality.

What’s most interesting about the upcoming launch, however, is that Ghost of Yotei‘s release date was reportedly leaked not too long ago, revealing that the game could be launching in July this year. This would line up with Ghost of Tsushima‘s own release window of July 2020, but given how rapidly July 2025 is approaching, it’s hard to believe that Ghost of Yotei will truly launch in that leaked window. Furthermore, Sucker Punch has been taking a very light marketing approach with Ghost of Yotei, which even further suggests that its leaked release window might not actually be true.

Ghost of Yotei’s Leaked Release Date Doesn’t Match Its Marketing

Ghost of Yotei’s Marketing Has Been Extremely Light for a Potential July Release

As far as marketing goes, Ghost of Yotei really hasn’t been doing much to build hype for the impending release. Marketing began with Ghost of Yotei‘s announcement trailer at the end of last September’s State of Play, but that trailer was only three minutes long and only a little over a minute of it actually showed anything worthy of note regarding its gameplay and world. Next, and more recently, came an update to the game’s website, simultaneously confirming Ghost of Yotei‘s 2025 release window and also providing a few more details about the game’s content.

Ghost of Yotei‘s recent website update confirmed “new mechanics, gameplay improvements, and even new weapons for Atsu to master, including odachi, kusarigama, and dual katanas.”

This light approach to marketing could be because Sucker Punch wishes to protect it from early criticism as much as possible, or it could simply be because the developer knows how anticipated the game is and has therefore decided that it doesn’t necessarily need extensive marketing. At the same time, neither of those reasons would really benefit Ghost of Yotei‘s success or fully prevent it from receiving preconceived criticism, so there has to be a different reason. Regardless of the reason, however, such light marketing could undercut Ghost of Yotei‘s leaked July release window.

Ghost of Yotei’s Marketing Approach Suggests a Heavy Reveal Is on the Way

In other words, no matter how credible the source behind the leak is, since Ghost of Yotei hasn’t shown much of its hand and July is now only around three months away, the leak might turn out to be false. That being said, it wouldn’t take much between now and July for Sucker Punch to unload a heavy reveal on fans, perhaps at Sony’s next State of Play.

As far as marketing goes, Ghost of Yotei really hasn’t been doing much to build hype for the impending release.

Sony’s State of Play events generally happen once a quarter, and since the most recent one took place in February this year, the next one is expected to occur in either May or June. With that in mind, it’s possible Ghost of Yotei could simply be waiting for the next State of Play before it shows fans more of what’s to come, and it really will be launching in July. A May 2025 State of Play would still leave it with enough time between then and July to build hype and generate more interest in the game. Either way, if Ghost of Yotei is aiming for a July 2025 release window, there has to be a big reveal on the way in some form or another.
