Florida State officially announces John Garrett hire

Florida State took a step towards the future of its football program last weekend when it was reported that they were hiring John Garrett to their front office. On Thursday, they made it official.

The role that Garrett will take on is Deputy Athletic Director and General Manager of Player Personnel, per Director of Athletics Michael Alford. This is a newly created position for Garrett and he will report directly to Alford while working closely with head coach Mike Norvell.

Garrett will lead all aspects of roster construction alongside Norvell, including high school recruiting strategy, transfer portal acquisition and retention, scholarship allocation, and long-term personnel planning. Also, he will be in charge of NIL, player evaluation, and recruiting analytics will be centralized and integrated into a single operational framework to ensure alignment, compliance, and competitive efficiency. As for Norvell, he will maintain full authority over player development, game preparation, culture, and on-field performance.

“John and I share a vision for building a championship program in today’s collegiate athletics structure,” Norvell said. “He was a valuable part of our staff when he was here previously, and I’m excited he will be leading this restructuring of our player personnel efforts. This new model shows our investment and will make us more efficient while enhancing player development, scouting and retention in a collaborative environment.”

Garrett’s previous stint with FSU was as their Director of Scouting (Offense) from 2022-2023. Over the last two years, he was the Director of Player Personnel at Duke. Garrett brings a ton of experience on the collegiate level with stops at Lafayette College (head coach), Richmond, Florida, Oregon State, Virginia, and Princeton as well. He also has experience in the NFL ranks as he worked for the Dallas Cowboys, Cincinnati Bengals, Arizona Cardinals, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in various different roles.

During his career, Garrett has built a reputation for being able to maintain competitive ambition with long-term program health. That’s something that Florida State desperately needs going forward to get its football program back to prominence.
